At Star of Hope, many who come here are hurting and suffering from painful memories of their past. We have all known and experienced grief at one time in our lives. For David, losing his wife caused him to retreat into a dark spiral – until he found his way to Christ. This is his story:
I was a good kid growing up. When I reached my teenage years, I began acting out: skipping class, doing drugs, drinking alcohol and chasing the ladies. Then at the age of 18, I received 16 years in TDC [Texas Department of Corrections]. I ended up doing 12 years and was released in 2010.
A few years after I was released, I met my soulmate. We were together for almost five years until she had a heart attack one day, and I couldn’t save her. The grief of losing her led me to lose my way. To cope, I began drowning my sorrows in misery and depression. This led me to become homeless. Then one day, in a drunken stupor, I hallucinated and saw an angel in my dream. The only conclusion I could come to was God was reaching out to me.
I called the Harris Center the next day, did a week of detox, and then came to Star of Hope in March of this year. Since I have been here, I have learned a lot about myself, but most importantly, I have learned about the grace and glory of God. I have gained an understanding of the Lord through the teachings of some powerful and graceful men. Something I have lacked throughout my life.
I plan to get my CDL [commercial driver’s license] and start a career in this new chapter of my life. Find a church home and give back to the community and the Star of Hope. Thank you Star of Hope, for giving this broken man a new start in life and showing me the light, power and love God has given me.
Not only did David find new hope in Christ, but he found lifelong friendships and a sense of community. Your support has allowed this broken man to feel whole again. Thank you!
