Trees of HopeTree of Hope

Thank you Trees of Hope for all you do for children at Star of Hope!

“For more than 20 years, Trees of Hope has existed to raise funds and awareness for Star of Hope. We’re deeply grateful for the opportunity to help make the promise of a better life a reality for thousands of Houstonians who struggle with the burden of homelessness. We are here because we care, we believe in Star of Hope and we see the difference it is making.” — Trees of Hope – Volunteers planting seeds of hope since 1990

When Houstonians think about baseball,
the Astros have our hearts!

Each year, with the arrival of spring, we all catch Astros fever and hope for a winning season that takes us to the playoffs…and beyond! While our hometown boys are experts on the fundamentals of running, hitting and throwing a baseball, it’s the organization’s compassion for those less fortunate that makes them our champions!

For the last three years, the Houston Astros Foundation has faithfully sent outstanding volunteers to Star of Hope’s Women & Family Emergency Shelter on the first and third Friday of each month. This committed group helps prepare, serve and clean-up lunch. The staff and shelter guests very much appreciate their willing hearts, smiling faces and kind words.

Of course, lunch is even more exciting when an Astros player shows up to visit with the men at our Men’s Development Center during lunch. Or the Astros’ mascot, Orbit, pays a special lunchtime visit to the children. All thanks to our friends at the Houston Astros Foundation!

As much as we love our Houston Astros, our hats are also off to a few other MLB teams! The Kansas City Royals, Washington Nationals, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays, along with Houston Astros players and MLB umpires have served lunch at the Star of Hope Men’s Development Center through a program developed by the Houston Astros team chaplain. When there’s a home game, opposing teams will likely spend some of their free time volunteering at Star of Hope!

In addition to assisting with lunch, The Houston Astros Foundation hosts an annual banquet honoring Star of Hope clients. This occasion, held at Minute Maid Park, is always an extraordinary holiday event! Astros personnel, dressed in festive Houston Astros sweater vests, serve our clients a gourmet meal before serenading them with Christmas carols. Amid shouts of joy and squeals of delight, Orbit appears to take photos with the children! It’s an evening our families will never forget.

Members of the Astros organization have also helped with special needs and one-time projects. The Houston Astros’ Marketing and Strategy Department carved exotic watermelon fruit boats, organized supplies, and packed bags for children at our Transitional Living Center who were attending summer camp.

In 2014 and 2015, the remarkable women of the Houston Astros Wives & Girlfriends made sure our teens would begin college with everything needed for success outside of the classroom. Large laundry hampers were labeled with each student’s name and filled to the brim – toiletry baskets, toothbrushes, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, hand soap, face soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, brushes, cleaning buckets, laundry detergent, dish soap, wash cloths, towels, cleaning supplies, paper towels, toilet paper, dust pans with brushes, gift cards and more! Some of the ladies even attended The Teen Graduation Ceremony as an additional show of support for our first-time college students.

Members of the Houston Astros Wives & Girlfriends gave financial gifts earmarked for improvements to the teen room and arranged for a once-in-a-lifetime “Teen Night with the Astros” field trip. They hosted many donation drives and made countless donations of children’s books, baby shower gift items, sack lunches, care packages, school supplies, diapers, urgent/current needs, and notes of encouragement.

The Houston Astros Wives & Girlfriends have also transformed Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Center into a Christmas Wonderland. They donated and decorated seven Christmas-trees, 55 wreaths, and 32 centerpieces! Along with the decorations, they provided Christmas music, Starbucks coffee, hot coco, cookies, and many other festive snacks to share with the clients. As if that wasn’t enough, a month later, the same group came back to take down, organize, and label all of the Christmas decorations. They even donated additional storage containers to help with that particular need! The Houston Astros Wives & Girlfriends did receive a little support – some of their family members and friends who assisted with this tremendous project organized their own group, Faithful Friends.

As a direct result of our friendship with the Houston Astros Wives & Girlfriends, we developed a new partnership with the Sienna Women’s Ministry at Houston’s First Baptist Church. Since 2014, they have made, and have pledged to continue to make, new Christmas wreaths for the single ladies dorm each December. Each client is thrilled to have her very own wreath, on her very own front door, throughout the entire Christmas season!

Not only does the Houston Astros organization lead our community in outreach and volunteerism, they find additional avenues for engagement through the support of collaborative partners. Christian Brothers Automotive teams up with the Houston Astros during their annual donation drive for Star of Hope. Every person who donates toiletries or diapers at a Christian Brothers Automotive location receives a free pair of Astros game tickets. Free tickets for Astros fans while helping Star of Hope meet the needs of our clients – that’s a homerun for us all!

The Houston Astros continue to be a tremendous blessing to our mission and the clients we serve! With the help of fantastic community partners and volunteers – like the Houston Astros – Star of Hope is ending homelessness…one life, one family at a time.
