A Safe Place to Begin Again
Star of Hope’s Women and Family Development Center at Cornerstone Community® serves up to 510 single women, single mothers and fathers with children each night with compassionate, Christ-centered care.
Our programs are designed to build belief, redeem trauma, protect families, and equip women to provide — changing the generational future of a family.

How We Help Women and Families
Emergency Shelter
Find rest and safety for you and your children, with immediate shelter, meals, hygiene supplies, and supportive care.
Recovery
Begin healing through our 30-day New Pathways program or 90-day state-licensed substance abuse recovery program.
Career & Education
Earn your GED, build a resume, and gain skills to secure employment and move toward independence.
Personal Development
Set goals, find stability, and grow in faith through one-on-one case management and life-skills coaching.
Children & Teens
Licensed early childhood care, after-school programs, Bible studies, music, art, and college prep for ages 6 weeks to 17 years.

Early
1900s
Reverend Dennis R. Pevoto was called by God to establish a refuge for men experiencing homelessness in Houston.
July 1
1907
Star of Hope Mission opens at 714 Franklin Street, the city’s first shelter for men facing homelessness.
Star of Hope Mission relocates to Congress Street, expanding the mission’s reach and presence in Houston.
1955
Star of Hope Mission moves to LaBranch Street, where the mission serves homeless men for the next 45 years.
1986
Women and Family Emergency Shelter opens on North Main Street, responding to the rise in family homelessness.
1988
Transitional Living Center opens on Calhoun Street, equipping women and families for long-term independence.
Women and Family Emergency Shelter moves to 419 Dowling Street thanks to a $1 million renovation to enhance safety and care.
2000
Doris and Carloss Morris Men’s Development Center opens at 1811 Ruiz Street, a 70,000 sq. ft. facility offering holistic recovery services.
2004
June Waggoner House of Hope Day Care Center launches at the Women and Family Emergency Shelter, providing childcare and after-school programs.
Transitional Living Center relocates to 6801 Ardmore, a purpose-built community with 111 apartments and centers for programs and services.
Cornerstone Community® Transformational Campus opens at Reed Road and Highway 288, centralizing housing and services for women and families.

Because of you, men, women, and families are discovering Christ’s compassion, reclaiming their God-given dignity, and stepping into healing and purpose.
Step 1: Intake & Arrival
Walk in with required documents. If space is available, you’ll be welcomed on the same day.
- Valid ID and Social Security card (if available)
- One bag per person
- Must be able to care for yourself and not be a harm to yourself or others
Step 2: Emergency or Substance Use Program (Days 1–30)
Safe room, clean clothes, meals, case management, and spiritual support. Begin stabilizing and creating your plan forward.
Step 3: New Pathways 30 Program
Join a Christ-centered program for emotional, spiritual, and substance abuse recovery. Includes chapel, Bible study, and licensed care.
Rise- arrive at MDC or WFDC employed at a livable wage.
Join a biblical life-skills course with workforce development, financial planning, counseling, life skills, and daily chapel.
Step 4: Workforce Development Program
Choose a program based on your needs:
- GED – Language, math, science, social studies
- Workforce Development – Job readiness & skills
- Rise – Maintain employment
- Restore – Support for elderly or medically fragile women
- Source I & II – Personal growth, responsibility & reconciliation
- Transitional Aged Youth – For young women (18–24) and their children
Step 5: Graduation & Independence
Leave with a job, savings, and support. Move forward in confidence, stability, and Christ-centered purpose.
