SHELTER AND BLANKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR STREET HOMELESS AT DOWNTOWN MEN’S DEVELOPMENT CENTER WHEN ARCTIC WEATHER ENGULFS HOUSTON
On Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Star of Hope’s Men’s Development Center, 1811 Ruiz Street, will offer shelter until they reach capacity and distribute hundreds of warm blankets, along with a flier listing the city’s warming centers and additional information on Star of Hope’s long-term recovery programs.
At Reed Road and 288, The Women and Family Development Center at Star of Hope’s Cornerstone Community® Campus is currently at capacity.
Star of Hope is in urgent need of all sizes of coats, new or gently used blankets, hats, gloves, and financial assistance to help continue the effort through the upcoming cold weather.
Starting Tuesday, January 16, in-kind donations can be brought to Star of Hope’s Cornerstone Community location at 2575 Reed Road @ Hwy 288 or to our downtown Donation and Distribution Center at 2320 Lamar. Drop off hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. to noon.
Employees of FOX 26 TV served Christmas dinner to the homeless women and children at Star of Hope’s Women and Family Development Center Monday evening. They even captured the event on LIVE television!
Sabrina Williams lost her husband earlier this year and maintaining a household with seven children and three grandchildren has become next to impossible. Being a former client of Star of Hope, she reached out to the mission for help and guidance. And that’s when the magic happened!
During lunch on the day before Thanksgiving, this Katy mother will be able to seat all ten of the children at the same table – for the first time!
Bel Furniture heard of her situation and is presenting the family with a brand-new, king-size dining room table. To celebrate, members of Star of Hope’s Extended Services team will set the table with an early home -cooked Thanksgiving meal.
As the table is delivered, it will be followed by additional living room furniture, beds and donated KingsDown mattresses. This will be a surprise to Sabrina and the children as the nearly empty house is filled with more items on her “wish list”.

As temperatures climb, Star of Hope’s Love-In-Action vans continue to distribute cold, bottled water and hygiene kits to the street homeless in Houston and surrounding counties. In addition, outreach case managers are alerting them to the fact that more intense life-threatening hot weather is ahead.
“We’ve been giving out water bottles all week,” said outreach case manager Ray Walker. “But today we’re giving bags full of multiple bottles of water, hygiene kits and an opportunity to get out of the heat by coming into our shelters and taking advantage of our long term, life changing recovery programs,” he said. “We’ll also pass along locations of numerous “cooling stations” around the city as we receive them.”
Multiple times a week the Star of Hope outreach vans visit areas in Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, and Brazoria counties frequented by homeless men and women living on the street.
The 116 year – old homeless mission has put out a call for financial assistance. Traditionally summer is a time when the need for help increases and donations decrease. Anticipating a brisk cold front engulfing the Houston area, Star of Hope’s LOVE IN ACTION VAN visits the known gathering places of Houston’s street homeless to distribute blankets and coats while spreading the word that potentially life-threatening cold weather is on tap through next week.
The downtown Star of Hope Men’s Development Center is currently at capacity.
Star of Hope is in need of all sizes of new or gently used coats, blankets, hats, gloves, and financial assistance to help continue the effort.

On Thursday, August 19, children living at the Women & Family Development Center at Star of Hope’s Cornerstone Community will receive a pair of brand-new shoes to walk into the 2021 school year with pride!
The children, assisted by Star of Hope staff and Trees of Hope staff, will try on and choose from a selection of pre-purchased shoes from Academy Sports and Outdoors that were funded by the Trees of Hope Board and donors.
The children will enjoy food and refreshments provided by Raising Cane’s.

Every “homeless run” equals a $500 donation during A Night of Hope

Skeeters baseball fans will get to experience a high-powered game AND help the homeless at the same time Friday, July 22 at Sugar Land’s Constellation Field. “In Texas, helping your neighbor is as American as apple pie and baseball,” said American Business Machines President and CEO Charles Brogna. “So through Star of Hope, we’ve dedicated an entire night to reaching out to the community we serve.”
ABM is underwriting the special evening which features limited edition, specifically designed jerseys for the players (to be auctioned off after the game), a donation opportunity, and each time one of the Skeeters players hits a homer against the York Revolution – it will be called a “Homeless Run” and the company will donate $500 to Star of Hope. “If it happens more than three times – we’ll double the donation,” said Brogna.
This first-time event comes at a time when Star of Hope needs the most help. Traditionally the summer is their busiest time of the year – and it’s when the Mission gets the least amount of financial support. The near triple-digit temperatures have intensified the usual overwhelming summer demands for shelter and assistance.

A Slice Of Hope is hosting the party for the seventh consecutive year. The New York-based national non-profit seeks to bring awareness of the “hunger epidemic” in the U.S. Each June they sponsor grassroots events in over 15 states to support and honor local food banks and community shelters and their work to combat the growing tide of U.S. poverty and homelessness. The Star of Hope Transitional Living Center serves as home to 63 families and 44 single women. The facility offers structured recovery programs encouraging education, employment, recovery from substance abuse, life skills, and spiritual growth. Overall, the three facilities and extended programs of Star of Hope Mission reach out to over 1,000 homeless Houstonians each day.
