What is it like for a child growing up in a homeless shelter? According to Brandon, “It’s challenging!”

He remembers getting on the school bus at the door of Star of Hope and hearing some of the other children laughing at him and calling him “the poor boy.” By the time he became a high school student he did not care anymore. He was a young man going places. His eyes were set on a football scholarship that would take him to college for an education and perhaps a professional football career.

Some said he was a dreamer. A homeless boy, they said, should lower his sights. But Brandon knows he is a son of the King. Living at Star of Hope in his teen years taught him that. God has made him strong and skillful with a drive to move ahead. He took the initiative to apply for a scholarship with a college in Iowa. They were impressed and gave him $30,000 a year!

This semester he is studying international business while playing football. Down the road he likes the idea of playing for the Buffalo Bills. Working for a marketing firm is another option that appeals to this confident young man.

His years at Star of Hope matured him. Living close to many strong Christian leaders has built character. Brandon trusts God has used his time at Star of Hope to equip him for the work ahead. “It taught me how to strive to the best of my ability,” Brandon said. He leaves here knowing God favors him and will always make his way fruitful!

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10, NIV
