Star of Hope is excited to be a small part of this public/private partnership. In addition to the Houston Police Department (Homeless Unit), Fire Department and Health and Human Services Department, we will have a staff member to liaison with detainees and refer them to the appropriate agency.  National statistics show that in other cities that have sobering Centers – 60-80% of the detainees are homeless. This lets Star of Hope reach a new segment of the population we may have not seen before.

Eleven Houston Area Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants will collect diapers for Star of Hope’s toddlers the weekend of March 24-25. The popular sports-themed eatery is calling the 2012 diaper drive “Homeless Babies – Help Us Cover Their End Zone.”

Cathy Camp, Regional Marketing Director for the chain, has announced that locations in Spring, Wallisville, Cypress, Rosenberg, Conroe, Richmond, Victoria, Tomball, Baytown, Lufkin and Katy will be participating. “We love the work that Star of Hope does for homeless men, women and children. Last year the organization put 55,000 diapers on little homeless bottoms – we want to do our part to help the babies, who are just innocent victims.” she said.

Selected locations already have donation boxes set up and will collect diapers of all sizes through Sunday, March 25.

Pillows, Blankets And Linens To Be Delivered at 2 Pm Tuesday

As thousands across the city celebrate Valentine’s Day, with chocolate, flowers and romantic dinners, the Hotel & Lodging Association of Greater Houston decided to show Houston’s less fortunate that someone cares for them, too.

The Hotel Association has rallied its members to collect and deliver hundreds of pillows, blankets, bed linens and other supplies to downtown’s Star of Hope Mission. The supplies, collected from hotels and lodging facilities all over the Greater Houston area, will be delivered to the Star of Hope warehouse downtown by truck, car, hotel vans at 1811 Ruiz, at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14.

While the Association has often made emergency collections during the onset of freezing temperatures or other disasters, Association President Stephanie Haynes noticed that with a lot of hotels undergoing remodeling or replacing inventories, there was a surplus of materials which could be donated. Valentine’s Day, she said, seemed to be the perfect time as, “Everyone needs love.” Nearly a dozen hotels immediately responded and others are still calling

The HLAGH is a non-profit organization with more than 250 hotels and industry related businesses representing over 32,000 guest rooms in the City of Houston. The organization is made up of general managers and owners of hotels and lodging facilities, suppliers, service companies and consultants who sell and service the hospitality industry.

Hank Rush, President and CEO of Houston’s Star of Hope, has announced that Friday, January 27, 2012 will be “A Day of Hope” on three Houston radio stations. “Cox Media Group has become a wonderful community partner. They’re helping us tell listeners about the critical homeless situation and how Star of Hope is making a difference.  Starting early Friday morning 93Q (92.9), The Eagle (107.5) and Country Legends (97.1) will each broadcast two commercials an hour featuring testimonies of men, women and children that were homeless and have had their lives changed by the recovery programs at Star of Hope,” he said.

“So many people have the misconception that “homeless” means the man on the street with a sign. But in fact, that man is a small percentage of the 14,000 people without homes in Houston right now. Many of them are families and single women. They stay with relatives or friends or maybe live in cars or abandoned buildings. They are the “hidden homeless” and we reach out to about 1100 of them every day through our four facilities.” said Rush.
 
This all-day awareness campaign is the climax to a two week Cox Media Group promotion inviting listeners to “Like” Star of Hope Mission’s Facebook page for a chance to win Breakfast for a Year * at any Houston area Chick-fil-A restaurant.

Cub Scout’s Clever Plan Collects 3.5 Tons Of Pet Food For Abandoned Animals And Raises Money To Provide 4000 Holiday Meals To Houston’s Homeless

Cub Master Jennifer Goebel is proud of The Black Horse Patrol of Magnolia Pack 1213. “Buy a 50 pound bag of dog or cat food for $20, give it to the five boys of Den 1 and in addition to feeding homeless animals, they will turn it into a $50 cash donation to provide holiday meals to the homeless men, women and children of Star of Hope.” she said. “That was our pitch. This year these ten year olds were able to collect over 7,000 pounds of pet food and we received a matching check for $7,000 to provide about 4,000 holiday meals (at $1.80 each) for residents of Star of Hope.” The pet food has already been delivered to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter making it possible for the facility to serve more than 17,000 meals to furry friends.

The idea hatched last year when the boys’ Christmas wish was to reach out to area abandoned animals and also to provide meals for the homeless. With the help of Quadvest Water Company they were able to do both. After the scouts approached them, their management agreed to donate a dollar a pound for all the pet food collected. The company wrote a check for more than $3300. The goal this year was to double the food and donation – and the Pack, with the help of a generous community, seemed to do it with ease.

Hank Rush, Star of Hope President and CEO, announced that as of Tuesday morning the Mission will switch to a “Cold Weather Alert” because of the cold front moving into our area.  With night time temperatures dropping into the 30’s through Friday, the downtown Men’s Development Center staff is ready for an overflow.

Star of Hope’s LOVE-IN-ACTION VAN will be loaded with blankets and sandwiches for hundreds of Houston’s street homeless. There is an URGENT NEED for men’s coats and cash donations. Overflow conditions are expected and the Mission is beginning to feel the financial strain.”We have provided for a record number of homeless this year. But donations aren’t keeping pace with the growing need.” said Rush. “Help us make someone’s Christmas brighter.”

Marriott delivered more than 2 tons of linens, blankets, towels and coats this Wednesday afternoon.

65 area Marriott International hotels have collected 5,000 pounds of linens, blankets; coats and cold weather - wear to give to the Star of Hope Mission to help keep Houston’s ever growing homeless population warm during the upcoming months of freezing weather.

This large gift is the result of an annual drive that featured a number of Marriott hotels as drop off points for donations from the general public as well as hotel inventory.

“Transitioning” to Be Dedicated Tuesday Afternoon: It took six homeless men about nine weeks to paint a mural depicting their determination to rise above life’s low point and optimistically embrace the future.  “Transitioning” an 8’ x 11’ work of art is the result of a partnership between residents of the downtown Star of Hope Men’s Development Center and the Houston - based Connect2Art Project. At the invitation of Houston’s Cultural Affairs Department, the painting will hang in the much traveled tunnel area of the Houston City Hall Annex.

Connect2Art Project is an organization that provides therapeutic and expressive art programs for individuals that are homeless, near homeless or in life crisis situations.  Art Consultant and Founder Sheri Hammonds is excited about the effort.  “Making the mural was an enjoyable process, but it was also therapeutic. This creative act evoked a sense of healing that comes from the natural human desire to express one’s feelings and emotions. The final product gives the community a better understanding of the plight of the homeless which will hopefully, lead to a more accepting and inclusive attitude toward these individuals,” she said.

“IT’S LIKE A DOZEN CHRISTMAS MORNINGS ALL AT ONCE”

It going to be smiles and styles as homeless children from the Star of Hope Transitional Living Center are fitted with their very own pair of brand new back to school shoes Friday afternoon. This second annual event is once again sponsored and hosted by Trees of Hope, a fundraising arm of the Star of Hope Mission.

The group, aged 4-17, will arrive at Houston’s Sports Authority store on Post Oak Boulevard and be greeted by Trees of Hope Guild members and their families. They will then be escorted to a special area set aside for    the “shoe party” complete with snacks, balloons and face painting.

“Our goal is to have the students look forward to going back to school,” said Trees of Hope Vice - President Terry Prather. “It’s very exciting for the children, the employees and even customers. It’s like a dozen Christmas mornings all at once,” she said. 

The Star of Hope’s Women and Family Emergency Shelter will host their annual “Back to School Back Pack Party” on the Friday before HISD students return to class. Staff members and volunteers will distribute school supplies, uniforms and back packs to about 150 school age children currently living in the shelter or sleeping on the floor waiting for a room. The supplies have been donated by the Patty McNeil family and friends group.

“When the children arrive at the shelter with their family, they’re in a crisis situation, often experiencing drama and uncertainty.” said Star of Hope President and CEO, Hank Rush. “As we all remember, the first day of school can be traumatic in its own right. This year we have a record number of “new homeless”. We try to make the student’s transition as smooth as possible by providing them with everything they need to blend in with their classmates.”

The following Monday, the Shelter’s children will board buses for schools including Rusk Elementary, E.O. Smith Middle School and Wheatley High School. The back pack distribution will be preceded by a blessing and comments from representatives of the participating schools.

The Houston based company that has become famous for donating 50% of their corporate profit to change lives, goes the extra mile when it comes to kids and back to school. EIS OFFICE SOLUTIONS President and Founder, Simon Lee has announced that this Monday, August 15, 2011, the company will deliver 700 packages of school supplies to homeless children at Star of Hope shelters. “We actually closed our shop for a half day and had all of our employees put together the packages. As a group, we decided that this, instead of a party, was the best way to celebrate our seventh year in business,” said Simon. “EIS was founded on the principle of giving back to the community.  Giving back to kids who need help the most is rewarding and our company is happy to be able to provide these learning tools.”

Fifteen EIS employees will unload the supplies Monday afternoon and present the packages to a select group of children representing the hundreds of school aged boys and girls currently residing at Star of Hope.

Attorney Tony Buzbee, of the Houston-based Buzbee Law Firm, recently presented the Star of Hope Mission for the Homeless with what was described as a substantial monetary gift to help fund the work at the Mission’s downtown Women and Family Emergency Shelter.

 
"I've given over five million to charities in the last five years. I look carefully before I give to ensure the monies will be used wisely. I prefer to give to Christian-based charities because I am a Christian, and I am particularly concerned with the homeless. I stress to my children the importance of giving, both money and time. I use each gift as a teaching moment for my children. I'm impressed with the Star of Hope Mission and know they will use this gift wisely to help those in need help themselves," said Buzbee.

Tony Buzbee is recognized as one of the very best trial lawyers in the United States and is a frequent lecturer and speaker. Aside from his legal practice, Buzbee is heavily involved in his community as a property developer, working to revitalize historic downtown Friendswood.  He also serves on the Board of Directors of Hometown Bank, the Board of Directors for The Jesse Tree (a nonprofit organization that assists the homeless and those in need in Galveston and Brazoria Counties), and the Board of Visitors of Texas A&M Galveston.

Free, Family Friendly Concert and Collection Drive to Provide Hope And Toiletries To Singles And Families In Need

When Bryan Bullington, Operator of Chick-fil-A of Pearland, realized that the number of Houston area homeless hovers around an all time record high, he set a plan in motion to reach out to his neighbors and help them reach out to those in need.  He and his staff created CLEAN START, a free, family friendly concert and collection drive inviting customers and nearby residents to attend and donate urgently needed items such as diapers, towels, underwear and toiletries.  "We are honored to partner with Star of Hope and have a real, immediate, significant impact on the lives of people in our community. To be a small part of helping people reclaim their lives is a privilege." he said.

The event will take place on Monday, July 25, 2011, starting at 5:30 pm, in the Chick-fil-A parking lot. Three bands, a strolling magician and a children’s play area will be featured. Chick-fil-A of Pearland opened in 2004 and has been ranked #1 in the chain in drive-thru service for the last five years, is ranked #1 in overall satisfaction for chicken brand and #5 in overall service satisfaction for quick service restaurants.

First Delivery Of Nearly 70,000

As record summer temperatures set in, area non-profits will provide 186,000 bottles of water to the homeless in the Bayou City thanks to a donation from the Houston based I Am Waters Foundation.  Nearly one-third, or 68,000 bottles, will go to Star of Hope for distribution to its women and children, mobile outreach and men’s programs as part of the homeless mission’s ten week Summer of Hope program.

The mission of the I Am Waters Foundation is to hydrate the bodies of homeless men, women and children who don’t have access to life’s most basic necessities. A 2010 Summer Water Pilot, spearheaded by former top model Elena Davis, resulted in the distribution of 80,000 bottles of water in Houston. I Am Waters has increased their distribution this year to 300,000 in three cities across Texas: Houston, Austin and Fort Worth.

Each bottle of water is designed with a simple inspirational message in a single word like HOPE or FAITH. “Over time, life on the streets often erodes one’s feelings of love, hope, and faith,” says Davis, “Holding a bottle with an inspirational word provides a powerful affirmation that is important for those who are not being replenished emotionally or spiritually.”

Love In Action Van Distributes Cold Water

Hank Rush, Star of Hope President and CEO, has announced that the Mission’s SUMMER OF HOPE initiative continues with a “Hot Weather Alert” because of the extreme heat. With day time temperatures consistently hovering at or around 100 degrees, the downtown Men’s Development Center and the Women and Family Emergency Shelter are encouraging all resident guests to stay inside. The two shelters have set up areas offering cold water and air conditioned space to anyone requesting it. NO ONE IS TURNED AWAY.

In addition, the Mission’s LOVE-IN-ACTION van will depart the Men’s Center at 1 PM on Tuesday loaded with cold water. Multiple times a week the van visit areas frequented by homeless men and women, distributing water and encouraging the street homeless to seek shelter at the Star of Hope.

“The number of Houston homeless has increased 25% this year, and at our four Star of Hope facilities, we’re serving about 30% more homeless men, women and children than this time last year,” said Rush. “Traditionally the summer time is when our population increases and our donations decrease. We can use some help.” he said. Typically, Star of Hope, a faith based mission,  offers food, shelter, education, spiritual direction and structured recovery programs to about 1,000 homeless men, women and children EACH DAY.

Key Energy Services Treats Kids To A “Pirate Theme Party” With All The FIXINGS

As part of the Mission’s Summer of Hope Campaign, school aged children from Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Center and Women and Family Emergency Shelter will celebrate their last day of the school year dunking volunteers in Davy Jones’ Locker, eyeing a giant shark, running the plank, enjoying a fish fry and taking part in Blackbeard’s Treasure Hunt. “We are proud to have an opportunity to create happy memories for these children and their families” said Key’s Lesa Carter. More than 50 volunteers from the Houston based onshore energy production services company will be onsite to coordinate the food and fun.

For the soon to be tired out moms, the Baybrook Macy’s is sending 10 volunteers to treat the ladies to makeovers.

Hundreds of Volunteers Give Homeless Shelter a Facelift During Worldwide Community Service Initiative

This Saturday, April 9, 2011, as many as 200 volunteers will lend a hand to the Star of Hope Mission with interior painting and improvements; maintenance for the gazebo, park benches, children’s play areas; and a donation of items to help shelter residents.

The effort is part of the 12th annual LyondellBasell Global Care Day, a worldwide community service initiative involving thousands of volunteers at 64 sites in 24 countries where the company has operations. LyondellBasell is one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies

While work is being done at the Star of Hope shelter, additional company volunteers will be reaching out to assist 13 other Houston area organizations.  .

“This is just one of the many ways that our employees work together with our local communities around the world to foster success in the areas of education, environmental conservancy and community prosperity.” said spokesperson David A. Harpole.

NCAA® Community Partners Reach Out to Help Houston’s Needy

On Monday, March 28, in an act of servant leadership and humility, local coaches, pastors and volunteers will wash the feet of nearly 300 residents of the downtown Star of Hope Women and Family Emergency Shelter and then personally fit them with socks and tennis shoes. Earlier in the day, the Feed the Hungry organization will add much needed groceries to the shelter’s pantry shelves.

The event is part of Final Four® week as the NCAA, Samaritan’s Feet and Feed the Hungry team up to distribute 2,011 pairs of shoes to those in need throughout the Houston community. “We’re honored that we were chosen to take part in such a meaningful display of charity and generosity.” said Star of Hope President and CEO Hank Rush. “The NCAA community partners have blessed our city in so many ways.” he said. Star of Hope serves 1,000 homeless men, women and children daily, through its four locations and our many partner organizations around Houston. 

HOUSTON — Buckner International and Star of Hope Mission will formally announce a new transitional program for single-parent families Feb. 22 at Star of Hope in Houston. The two social service organizations will team up to start Buckner Family Place of Houston, with operations beginning in May. Family Place is designed to strengthen single-parent families and reduce barriers to self-sufficiency. Residents are enrolled in an academic or vocational program and receive housing and child care assistance along with supportive counseling and case management services. Buckner currently operates similar programs in six Texas communities, including Buckner Family Place of Conroe.

Star of Hope President and CEO Hank Rush said the collaboration will allow each of the organizations to cross-refer families into each other’s unique programs, as well as “share programs and resources common to the Family Place model, such as parent education, financial literacy classes, after-school programming, tutoring for children and parents, and spiritual enrichment activities.”

Star of Hope is Houston’s largest provider of services for homeless men, women and children, serving more than 6,000 people each year, with life-changing recovery and long-term educational programs for sustained, independent, living, Rush said. Buckner President Albert L. Reyes the Family Place model is a “good fit” for a col-laboration between Buckner and Star of Hope.

“Star of Hope’s focus on serving the homeless and Buckner’s desire to strengthen families are very inclusive,” Reyes said. “One of the root causes of homelessness is the lack of education, and Family Place’s educational-based model seeks to resolve that issue.”

Reyes said that the two agencies have not selected a site for the residences, but the location “will be determined by the selection of a nearby college or university that fits the needs of the program and the families we serve.”

Star of Hope Mission, founded in Houston in 1907, is a Christ-centered community dedicated to meeting the needs of homeless men, women and their children. Positive life-changes are encouraged through structured programs which focus on spiritual growth, education, employment, life-management and recovery from substance abuse.

Buckner International, based in Dallas, is a 131-year-old Christian organization with programs for orphans, vulnerable children and families in 12 countries. In addition, Buckner provides services to elders through a network of seven senior living commu-nities in Texas.

In addition to over 200 full time “program” beds, the Star of Hope’s Men’s Center has about 100 “overnight transient” beds. The Center is near capacity now but can offer additional sleeping space on the chapel floor for about 100 homeless men. The Mission’s day room will be open to any men wishing to take part in daily activities.

Star of Hope’s LOVE-IN-ACTION van will be loaded with blankets and coats for the hundreds of Houston’s street homeless who choose not to enter a shelter. Multiple times this week the van will visit areas frequented by homeless men and women. “When we go out in the van our staff offers shelter to any and all of these men and women without a home. If they refuse, we try and make them as comfortable as possible,” said Rush. Right now Star of Hope has an urgent need for warm stocking caps and gloves as well as 2XL and 3XL men’s and women’s coats.

In addition to 150 full time “program” beds, the Star of Hope’s Men’s Center has 150 “overnight transient” beds. The Center is near capacity now but can offer additional sleeping space for about 100 homeless men. 

In preparation for the cold weather, the Mission’s LOVE-IN-ACTION van will depart the Men’s Center at 1 PM on Monday loaded with blankets, coats and “We Care” packages (bottled water, socks, shampoo, crackers, band aids, etc) prepared by local churches and civic groups. The van will visit areas frequented by homeless men and women.

The downtown Star of Hope Women and Family Emergency Shelter is at its 275 bed capacity but reports that additional space will be available to those seeking shelter from the cold weather. No one will be turned away.

On December 3, 2011 from 6pm-10pm the Merchants of 19th Street in The Historic Houston Heights will once again hold their annual Holiday on 19th event.  For over 20 years this event has been a fun way for Houstonians and their families to kick off the holiday season in a more traditional “Main Street” way. Visitors will be treated to holiday refreshments, strolling carolers, Santa and much more as they “Shop, Sip and Stroll” down 19th Street. The street features some of the most unique shopping and art anywhere in Houston including antiques, books, fashions for men and women, original artwork, and unique gifts and home furnishings that won’t be found anywhere else in town!

For the first time in the history of this event, merchants have partnered with the Star of Hope Mission to “Blanket Hope” down 19th Street. From now through the December 3rd event, merchants will be collecting new and gently used blankets and new toys to help make the holidays brighter for those in need.  On the evening of December 3rd, merchants will be offering discounts or free gifts with the donation of a blanket or toy, and many will be donating a percentage of sales from the evening to Star of Hope after the event.

Taxis Create “Yellow Roads Of Texas” Caravan To Hard Rock Cafe. About fifty independent contractor drivers from Houston’s largest taxicab fleet, Yellow Cab, will give up their Thanksgiving morning to transport over 125 homeless women and children from Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Center to the downtown Hard Rock Café. “These Yellow Cab drivers are tremendously important to The Star of Hope Mission, to our clients, and to the community at-large,” said Mike Spears, Marketing Director of Yellow Cab. “Our volunteer drivers really make a difference and they have the opportunity to experience the joy and satisfaction of providing a valuable service in their own community on Thanksgiving Day.” 

Marilyn Fountain, Star of Hope’s Community Relations Manager likes the idea. “This is such an exciting opportunity to bring the heart of Thanksgiving to our clients. And now it seems to be becoming a tradition – our Fourth Annual Yellow Roads of Texas” she said.

On Thanksgiving Day, Houston’s Hard Rock Café will continue a tradition that has spanned 20 years. Although the famous theme restaurant will be closed to the public, the staff, management, friends and families donate their time to cook and serve turkey and all the fixings to homeless Houstonians.

About 250 residents of Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Center and the downtown Women and Family Emergency Shelter will be treated to the meal along with a visit from Santa – complete with gifts. Around half of the 250 attending will be children.

Economy and Heat to Blame – Donations Have Dropped

Star of Hope President and CEO, Hank Rush, has announced that the homeless mission’s downtown Women and Family Emergency Shelter at 419 Dowling, has reached a record overflow. “During this last week, each night we have averaged about 100 women and children waiting for beds. This is unprecedented,” he said. The shelter has been at its 256 person capacity, with a waiting list, for two years. “We always experience extra people in the summer – but this year because of the extreme heat and the economy – we’re seeing more children, more families and lots of new faces.” said Rush. The homeless women and children on the waiting list spend the night on a pallet inside the shelter, out of the heat and asleep in the atrium area. The Men’s Center has been at or near its 300 person capacity every night this year.

The record numbers and weak economy have created a major challenge for the homeless mission. “More people means more food, more utilities and extra staff. Our donations have dropped considerably. Currently, we’re experiencing about a $700,000 short fall. Soon we won’t be able to deal with the overflow and we’ll have to cut programs and turn people away …we hope we don’t get to that point,” Rush said. The Star of Hope chief is optimistic. “It’s been my experience that Houston is one of the most generous cities in the country. But it’s a historic fact – when the temperature goes up, the donations go down. We need the city to open its 'summer heart' and help us help their neighbors in crisis,” said Rush.

Houstonians are encouraged to donate cash, canned, non-perishable food, gently used clothing and even volunteer hours. Specific immediate needs include towels, blankets, diapers, water and toiletries. Star of Hope’s Summer of Hope campaign boast a new “giving” feature- texting. Key Energy Services Treats Kids To A "Fiesta de Esperanza"

As part of the Mission’s Summer of Hope Campaign, school aged children from Star of Hope’s Transitional Living Center and Women and Family Emergency Shelter will spend their first “no-school” day jumping on a giant moonwalk, eating fajitas and enjoying a carnival featuring a petting zoo, cotton candy and popsicles. “They’ve been through a lot and it’s our pleasure to make it possible for them to just be regular kids celebrating the beginning of summer,” said Key’s Lesa Carter. More than 50 volunteers from the Houston based onshore energy production company, Key Energy Services, will be onsite to coordinate the food and fun.

For the soon to be tired out moms, the Baybrook Macy’s is sending 10 volunteers to treat the ladies to makeovers.

Children entering the Star of Hope Shelters during the school year are immediately registered and start attending area HISD schools including Rusk Elementary, Gregory Lincoln Middle School and Wheatlley High School. In July, donors have made it possible for the children to attend a week of Summer Camp.

Mary Chapman Cantu, Star of Hope Vice President of Development, has announced that about 40 homeless children will make Mother’s Day cards and create gifts for their Moms this Wednesday afternoon at the Mission’s Transitional Living Center.

The event is hosted by the Trees of Hope Guild, part of a non-profit organization founded in 1990, that raises funds for Star of Hope. Guild members and event chair Shannon Corbett will join other volunteers in working with the 4 – 12 year olds as they use construction paper and glitter to create cards and show Mom they care. Also, the children will have their pictures taken and inserted into a frame they made just for Mom.

After about 45 minutes of design time, the mothers will be invited to join their children as they enjoy homemade Hope Floats and watch a brief music and dance number presented by the Second Baptist group JUMP. Immediately following the performance the kids will present their gifts and cards to Mom.

Sportsman Channel’s Hunt.Fish.Feed. (www.huntfishfeed.org) initiative is coming to Houston’s Star of Hope Mission to help feed local residents in need on Friday, April 16 at 4:30pm.  The Hunt.Fish.Feed.SM initiative is a unique outreach program that taps an underutilized food source—game meat and fish donated by sportsmen—to feed those struggling with hunger across America.  Sportsman is partnering locally with Comcast and Safari Club International Foundation on this Hunt.Fish.Feed.SM tour stop.  Numerous local and state elected officials will be attending to help with the volunteer efforts.

EMPLOYEES TURN CORPORATE AWARD INTO HELP FOR THE HOMELESS: AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry Houston has announced plans to “give back” to the city they serve. Board Member Rob Frohn recently awarded the local group a $14,000 prize from their company–wide Community Program Best Practices competition. They will use the grant to fund an “extreme make-over” at the Bayou City’s Star of Hope Women and Family Emergency Shelter.

In her spare time and for the last four years, Catherine Chau, the manager of the project for AkzoNobel Houston, has been volunteering with Star of Hope. “The Shelter, which houses 275 homeless women and children, has a large multi-purpose meeting room that is now being used to sleep 50 – 80 overflow guests each night,” she said. “We plan to make this area far more comfortable for these overnight guests and add more functionality to the room. Our employees will paint the area a warm, inviting color and furnish it with lots of tables and chairs. An overhead projector, sound system, DVD player and retractable screen will be installed to help with meetings and classes for these residents.”

National recording artists NASH3 join with the First Methodist Houston’s contemporary music group First Praise, Sugar Land’s Ballet Grace and KHOU’s Deborah Duncan to present “Rocka My Soul” an evening of song, dance and hope, produced by Cookie Joe’s Dancin’ School.

Nash3, a popular singing-songwriting trio is comprised of Bill and Kim Nash and their youngest son, Jimmy. In late 1994, superstar Reba McIntyre recorded a song that Kim and Bill collaborated on which became a top five hit single entitled, "They Asked About You." That song went to #1 and has currently sold over six million copies. Their latest hit is "In God We Still Trust", which was not only a #1 independent record for Nash3, but was recorded by country super group, Diamond Rio, on Arista Nashville Records. Since the worldwide release of the single and music video, it has become increasingly popular, and is quickly becoming a patriotic standard.

January 7, 2010:  As the hard freeze descends upon Houston, the Star of Hope Emergency Shelters are already reporting capacity crowds. “We try never to turn anyone away” says Mary Chapman Cantu, Vice President of Star of Hope Development. “So after our beds are full, we turn to the alternative – available floor space.”

The Downtown Men’s Center reports that all of its 300 beds are being utilized and expects an additional 50-100 homeless men to spend the night on the chapel or cafeteria floor. Blocks away, the 278 bed Star of Hope Women and Family Emergency Center is at capacity and will host an extra 50 – 100 women and children on the large atrium floor inside the warm shelter.

“We’d love to supply each one of our “overflow” guests with a soft bed mat but we simply don’t have enough, said Cantu, “Between the Women and Family Shelter and the Men’s Center, we could use about 100 more.”

Sleeping bags are also in short supply. The Mission’s Love – In – Action Van distributes the coveted bags as often as they are available to the many hundreds of hard core homeless who insist on “toughing out” the cold weather under a bridge or overpass.

Donations of sleeping bags, soft bed mats, blankets, warm coats and gloves are welcomed at the Star of Hope Men’s Center at 1811 Ruiz during business hours.

Christian recording artist Matt Maher was in town recently to debut his new CD, Alive Again. He met fans and signed CD’s at three LifeWay Book Stores in Houston during a KSBJ Street n Greet tour sponsored in part by Star of Hope Mission.

The Star of Hope’s Women and Family Emergency Shelter will host their annual “Back to School Back Pack Bash” on the Friday (August 21) before HISD students return to class. Staff members and volunteers will distribute school supplies, uniforms and back packs to about 100 school age children currently living in the shelter. The supplies have been donated from individual and corporate donors as well as Artbridge, HISD and Second Baptist.

“When the children arrive at the shelter with their family, they’re in a crisis situation, often experiencing trauma and uncertainty,” said Star of Hope President and CEO, Hank Rush. “As we all remember, the first day of school can be traumatic in its own right. We try to make their transition as smooth as possible by providing them with everything they need to blend in with their classmates.”

The following Monday, the children will board buses for schools including Rusk Elementary, E.O. Smith Middle School and Wheatley High School. The back pack distribution will be preceded by a blessing and comments from representatives of the participating schools.

Medifast, a weight loss sponsor on Houston's Sunny 99.1 and KTRH AM Radio, had a contest between "on air" personalities Marc Sherman (Sunny) and Michael Berry (KTRH) to see who could lose the most weight in the allotted time. The winner would receive $500 to give to their favorite charity.

Mary Chapman Cantu, Star of Hope Vice President of Development, has announced that 20-25 homeless children will make Mother’s Day cards and create gifts for their Moms this Friday afternoon at the Mission’s Transitional Living Center.

The event is hosted by the Trees of Hope Guild, part of a non-profit organization founded in 1990, that raises funds for Star of Hope. Guild members and event co-chairs Julie Bayouth and Kristin Gauntt will join other volunteers in working with the 4 – 12 year olds as they use construction paper and glitter to show Mom they care. Also, the kids will use their imagination to fashion colorful, useful gifts.

After about 45 minutes of design time, the mothers will be invited to join their children as they watch a brief music and dance number presented by the Second Baptist group “JUMP”. Immediately following the performance the kids will sing a song to their moms and present the cards and gifts.
